Rohi partnered again with Austin Chinese American Network (ACAN) and Hope Chapel Youth Group on a trip to Piedras Negras, March 16-20, 2026. We had an AMAZING Trip. This is our fourth annual trip with ACAN and third annual trip with Hope Chapel.
TThe 22 participants from ACAN and 11 from Hope Chapel, plus Scott and Cory, brought our team to 35 (29 teens and 6 adults). We were blessed to serve for the third year with Ken and Leah Spieler at the ministry center they run in Piedras Negras, Mexico. And for the second year, we shared the facility with a team of college students and medical professionals from the Global Medical Missions Alliance.
During our 5 day trip, we split into three teams. The STEM team visited schools and did engineering experiments - building boats of foil, popsicle sticks and rubber bands and testing them to see which design could hold the most weight. About 350 students participated in grades 4-12. Our final intercultural activity was an epic basketball game which you can watch HERE. The construction team stayed at the ministry center and stuccoed a dorm building where our boys were staying. The weather cooperated with us, with cool temperatures keeping the working conditions pleasant. The third team - the cooking team - did an amazing job keeping everyone very well nourished. Our Chinese themed meals were delicious! Teens often participated in multiple teams, getting a range of experiences.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, we held two evening fiestas (as outreach and evangelistic events for local churches). Everyone had a role helping run stations - zip line, rock climbing, face painting, .crafts, food (hot dogs and nachos), slack line, and several others.
During our daily team meetings, participants could reflect and share. Each night we had Happy Noodle time (a 9 PM snack mainly consisting of instant noodles) and we played games before lights out at 10:30 PM.
Thursday afternoon we had lunch at a food court and then did a shopping trip to downtown Piedras Negras. We even took our group photo in front of the large Piedras Negras sign. When we got back, we had dinner that the cooking team prepared that morning and then the talent show! Whether in musical theatrical numbers, comedy sketches, or karaoke, everyone had a great time.
We were blessed to have a really smooth experience all around. Everyone returned safely on Friday having shared and received God's love.
